A lot of Japanese sites block overseas IPs — does a residential proxy get through?
Yes, provided the exit really is a Japanese carrier's residential address. These blocks are usually written against ASN and geo-IP data, catching hosting ranges and foreign ISPs together, while a broadband line under NTT, SoftBank or KDDI reads as an ordinary Japanese subscriber to the same rules. That buys reachability and nothing more: membership requirements, age gates and delivery restrictions on the site are unaffected.
Rakuten and Mercari require identity verification — does a Japanese IP satisfy it?
No, and it should not be read that way. Identity verification checks documents, a registered address and a bank account; a proxy satisfies none of that, and we make no such claim. What the IP does is consistency — if registration, daily logins and fulfilment actions all come from the same Japanese household address over months, nothing in the chain jumps regions and pulls you into an extra review. That argues for long-term static IPs, from $3.8 per IP-month, with the address fixed for the lease.
Do I need city-level targeting to scrape Amazon.co.jp delivery estimates?
You do. Stock status, estimated delivery date and shipping charge are all computed per prefecture: next-day in central Tokyo can be three days in Hokkaido, and free-shipping thresholds differ too. A table collected from a generic Japan IP will be wrong wherever you apply it. For heavy Japanese scraping, should I buy by traffic or by bandwidth?
